Gingivita
Gingivitis is a lighter form of periodontal disease. There is no absolute necessity for a visit in the dental clinic in order to identify gingivitis. It manifests through gum bleeding while brushing teeth, eating or spontaneously and gum change of colour and form ( from light pink they become red and swollen).
The disconfort the patient experiences is reduced at this stage, but the patient may experience tension and itching at the level of the gums, and this is when they should go to the dentist’s.
Gingivitis is caused by bacterial plaque build-up caused by inadequate hygiene, but it may also be associated to physiological states ( puberty, pregnancy, menopause), when hormonal variations influence the reactivity of the organism.
Treated in an adequate manner and by keeping a good oral hygiene, gingivitis is reversible, therefore ultrasound calculus removal, professional brushing, Air Flow, fluoridation and oral hygiene instructions are necessary. These are performed in the dental clinic.
